The Rafah Crossing and Why It Is Vital to the Gaza Strip

The+Rafah+Crossing+and+Why+It+Is+Vital+to+the+Gaza+Strip

The Rafah Crossing on the border of Egypt and Gaza has been seeing many Palestinians gather there due to Israel’s predicted upcoming ground offensive on the Gaza Strip. The Rafah Crossing is one of three exit points from Gaza, with the other two shut down. Erez, the northernmost one, is another crossing for people coming from Israel and Gaza, and Kerem Shalom is only meant for commercial purposes. Rafah is also the only area where humanitarian aid can enter Gaza.

Unfortunately, it is hard for Palestinians to cross through. This is because normally, they are required to register with authorities around three weeks in advance. Even after this, Egypt and Palestine can reject them without explanation.

The Rafah Crossing, however, is currently closed due to Egypt worrying about an influx of Palestinian refugees coming into the country. Confusion and frustration reign supreme there.
