In the city of Cornwall, a woman runs a hospital for injured seals and does volunteer work, rescuing all kinds of sea life, and was recently awarded the Animal Action Award for her work. Lizzi Larbalestier is a volunteer for British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) and spent nine months taking care of injured seals after turning her Airbnb into an animal hospital. After deciding that wasn’t enough, her, her husband, and other volunteers built a fully functioning seal hospital in Cornwall. The hospital has ten pens while the couple’s home only has six. Now Larbalestier is expecting around one-hundred seals to come for rehabilitation a year, after last year they had 3,000 calls to respond to injured or displaced sea life. Some seals need first aid because they are injured from fishing nets and boats, some are separated from their parents, and some are unhealthy due to lack of food. Just as their reasons for why they are there may vary, their time there may also vary. Some are simple checkups and some may need more medical attention. After hospital treatment, the pups are transferred to the Cornish Seal Sanctuary or West Hatch RSPCA facility, prior to their release in the wild. Larbalestier also says that their facility also treats whales, dolphins, and other sea life creatures.
