Cuban Spying Case

The former US ambassador to Bolivia, Manuel Rocha, has been charged and arrested for alleged spying charges. He was a Cuban agent for over 40 years, and it resulted in one of the biggest spying scandals of the 21st century. One US Attorney General named Merrick Garland stated that “Mr Rocha’s alleged crimes are one of the highest-reaching and longest-lasting infiltrations of the US government by a foreign agent.”

Many observers remain baffled about how he could have risen so high in the US diplomatic service while evading detection for so long. He earned the reputation of a hard-nosed conservative while in fact, he had a deep-seated allegiance to the Cuban Revolution. An undercover FBI agent posing as a representative of the Cuban government revealed that Mr. Rocha saw the US as “the enemy” and he praised the late Cuban leader Fidel Castro.

The only person who wasn’t surprised by this incident was the former head of the CIA, James Olsen. He even stated “I would rank them as probably the most aggravating intelligence service I’ve ever worked against,” he says. “That’s not just because they’re so devious and ruthless, but because they’re so good.” Mr. Olsen even said, “I consider the Cubans more disciplined and more effective pound-for-pound than the KGB ever was.”
