A Indian teen who loves Robotics also loves his grandmother very much. Together, it led him to create a new invention that could improve care for Alzheimer’s patients. Hemesh Chadalavada recalled when he was 12 years old he saw his grandmother go into the kitchen to make tea and she left the stove on. It shocked Hemesh but it drove him to spend hours on YouTube learning about robotics to try to find a to help make sure it could detect if accidents like this happen if nobody was there. Jayasree was diagnosed with Alzhimeirs the year before and passed away in 2023 due to the disease. By then, Hemesh had invented the the Alpha Monitor, a bade that sends alerts if the person wearing it wanders off or falls. They told him it couldn’t be a watch because patients often take them off. In 2022 he beat 18,000 entries to win a Samsung- sponsered science fair and won 120,000 dollar grant and the opportunity to mentor under some of Samsung’s most experienced engineers. He also won over the admiration of the country’s Prime Minister who posted on X that he really admired the young man. He hopes to get the Alpha Monitor on market by September and afterwards hopes to keep studying Robotics.
