On March 12, 2024, Haiti’s prime minister Ariel Henry officially stepped down from his power as gangs run wild in Haiti. This happened after a couple of regional leaders met in Jamaica to discuss a government transition. He is currently stuck in Puerto Rico because of gangs preventing him from coming home. Mr Henry had led the country since July of 2021 following former President Jovenel Moïse’s assassination. He had repeatedly delayed elections, stating that “security must be restored first.” Many Haitians had questioned his authority over the country for this long without an election being held. The local gangs took this into their own hands and demanded that the Prime Minister step down from his position while causing havoc across the country. This was successful as Haiti couldn’t fight back since the gangs had destroyed over 40 police stations.
