Tens of millions of people have voted so far on the first day of the elections, and almost 1 billion people are eligible to cast a vote in the seven elections that will take place, electing members to a 543-seat lower house of Parliament. PM Modi is also seeking a 3rd term in office. However, to combat the BJP, the INC and other major opposition parties formed an alliance. Key concerns include a job crisis, rising prices, a suppression of opposition, and politics of religion.
On Friday, over 160 million people in 21 different states were eligible to vote for about 1,600 candidates in 102 seats. The next voting round will take place on April 26.
